Rising Above Your Emotions - Creflo Dollar - Creflo Dollar Ministriesby: Creflo Dollar

A quick glance at today’s headline news will reveal the emotional state of people everywhere. From suicide bombings to other crimes of passion such as murder and rape, out–of–control emotions play a large role in people’s decision–making processes. Their choices are affecting others in powerful, yet negative, ways. It is easy to see why God wants you to have complete mastery over your emotions.

Too often people allow their emotions to govern their lives. The problem with leading an emotionally–charged existence is that it will cause you to make decisions that will lead you away from the will of God. While He created you to have feelings, they were never intended to control you or disturb your peace of mind.

Emotions are feelings on the inside of you that are designed to move you either toward or away from the will of God for your life. Positive emotions will move you toward a closer relationship with the Father. But emotions such as depression, anger, anxiety, bitterness and jealousy will hinder what God wants to do in your life.

As a Christian, you have authority over your feelings; you don’t have to be ruled by them. Jesus demonstrated this on a consistent basis. Throughout His ministry, He had plenty of opportunities to allow His emotions to get Him off track and lead Him away from the will of God for His life. He was misunderstood, falsely accused, scorned and had to endure the suffering of the cross. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He was presented with one of His greatest tests—to either abandon His journey to the cross or fulfill what He came to the earth to do. There was so much pressure on Jesus at this time that He even sweated blood out of His pores (Luke 22:44). Now that’s pressure!

Even though the Scripture says that Jesus suffered extreme mental anguish, depression and emotional trauma as He faced His crucifixion and death, He rose above His emotions to embrace what God had called Him to do. If He had not, salvation would not have been made available to you and me. Jesus was God in the flesh, but He was also a man who felt everything that you and I feel in life, both positive and negative. He proved that it is possible to conquer your emotions in the face of the worst kind of circumstances.

Jesus said in Luke 10:19, “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” That means that there is really nothing anyone can do or say to you that has the power to hurt you if you don’t allow it to. The choice is yours. How you respond to emotionally challenging situations determines your victory. By mastering your feelings, you show Satan that you can’t be moved, no matter what he throws at you.
